The Ten Minute Play Festival is an annual event hosted by Seoul Players in Seoul, Korea. We’ll have two or three nights of first round performances, with two-three finalists being chosen each night. These finalists will go head to head in the final round, and the winner will win fabulous prizes and eternal glory.
The festival will feature an assortment of short (10 minute, hence the name) plays in a variety of styles, on a variety of themes. Past shows have included dance, pantomime, drama, comedy, melodrama, romance, stage fights, zombies, and snowmen. As well as an opportunity for inexperienced directors to give directing a try, this is an opportunity for experienced directors to hone their craft, try something new, and show their skills to the Seoul community – if you are interested in directing a mainstage production for us or for another company in the future, this is a great place to start proving yourself and building connections in Seoul.
Interested? Read below for all the details, and then send an email to seoulplayers@gmail.com with Director in the subject line. Please include your resume, and a message telling us a bit about yourself, what your directing style is, and what you hope to accomplish in the festival.
What you’ll get from us:
On June 17th, we’ll send you a bunch of scripts to choose from. You’ll have about 9 days to tell us your top three choices (you’ll be given one or two to direct, according to your stated preference).
We’ll organize and book general auditions for the festival in early July.
You may also audition as an actor, but you may only participate in a total of 2 plays as an actor and/or director. (planning to write a play? You can submit your script here).
We’ll mediate the post-audition meeting to ensure that it’s equitable (everyone gets an equal mix of their first, second and third choices).
We’ll provide informational/organizational support (but not financial) in securing rehearsal spaces. In the past directors have used: borrowed or rented bar spaces (we can provide you a list of free and paid spaces), rented studio/rehearsal spaces (we can provide you a list of paid spaces), rooftops (we can offer a few in the HBC/Kyungnidan area), workplaces, apartments, parks, noraebangs, and coffee shops. Community theatre means being creative and resourceful.
We’ll provide two weekends with times for you and your actors to rehearse in the performance space. These are tentatively planned for August 31st-September 1st, and September 14th-15th. The second weekend (which is the weekend BEFORE the Chuseok holiday) will be for lights, sound, or other tech needs.
We’ll provide a festival stage manager and light/sound operator to work with you on meeting your show’s technical needs.
We’ll provide an assortment of theatre blocks in the performance space, which you may use as set pieces for your show.
We will take care of all promotions and ticket sales for the performances.
The first round of performances is tentatively scheduled for September 27th, September 28th, and October 4th (to be confirmed). Your show will be performed on one of these days.
If your show is chosen as a finalist, it will go on to a second performance, scheduled for Saturday, September 5th. The festival winner will be chosen after the performance on the 5th and will win valuable prizes, as well as major bragging rights.
What we expect from you:
After receiving scripts from us (on June 17th), submit your top three choices by June 28th (you will be given one or two to direct, according to your stated preferences. You may only participate in a total of 2 plays as an actor and/or director)
Attend general festival auditions in early July, and cast from within that talent pool.
You may also audition as an actor, but you may only participate in a total of 2 plays as an actor and/or director. (planning to write a play? You can submit your script here).
Attend a post-audtion casting meeting (immediately following Sunday auditions). Be prepared to cast your second- or third-choice actors in some cases if your first-choice actors are in high demand from other directors, or if their schedule is incompatible with yours.
Be out of town for no more than two weeks from mid July-August 31st.
Organize and run your own rehearsals. Let festival producers know if you are having problems such as securing a rehearsal space or accommodating your actors’ schedules, and we will work with you to resolve the problem.
With your actors, attend two rehearsals in the performance space. These are tentatively planned for August 31st-September 1st, and September 14th-15th. The second weekend (which is the weekend BEFORE the Chuseok holiday) will be for lights, sound, or other tech needs.
Stay in contact with the festival stage manager and keep her aware of any sound/light/or other tech requirements that you may have.
In an effort to simplify scene changes between plays and to create a consistent look, this year we are asking all directors to plan to use theatre blocks (which we will provide) as their primary set pieces.
Be available, and ensure your actors are available, to perform in the first round on either September 27th, September 28th, or October 4th (to be confirmed). If someone in your group has a conflict with ANY of these dates, inform festival producers as soon as possible.
Keep Saturday, September 5th open for a possible second performance if your show is chosen as a finalist after the first round.
Interested? After reviewing the details above, send an email to seoulplayers@gmail.com with Director in the subject line. Please include your resume, and a message telling us a bit about yourself, what your directing style is, and what you hope to accomplish in the festival.
